Urban Forest Project

The Urban Forest Project begins with noticing nature….really noticing nature! Over three weeks, I teach K-12 students to produce detailed drawings of their observations of the trees growing around their school and region. We study known and lesser-known naturalist-artists from Beatrix Potter to Charley Harper and Georgia O’Keeffe for style inspiration. Students develop vocabulary and confidence in their ability to notice and record the intricacies of nature, filling their Naturalist Notebooks with observations that become material for designing a motif. The last week of the residency students create mini-screenprinting frames and print their designs in repeated patterns.
