Trees of Prospect Park

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Trees are everywhere, sheltering us from weather, making oxygen, giving us a fascinating show of growth and rest throughout the year. Our neighborhood trees connect us to the the Mississippi River, each other, and our shared history in surprising ways.

Artist and botanist Sarah Nassif will the Trees of Prospect Park with artist and resident Sarah Nassif, and learn how to see, feel, hear and identify trees in new ways. Make drawings of your observations to help create a neighborhood field guide to our unique community of trees, enjoy a guided or solo tree walk,. All ages and abilities can take part.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Trees of Prospect Park is an on-going with no formal schedule. Join

  1. Self-Guided Tree Walk (1 mile with steep stairs) I have created a tree itinerary to follow that follows East River Road south from the Franklin Bridge, down the boat ramp at Cecil St., along the river bottoms path, and up the many steps of the Franklin staircase. You can choose to do just the upper path if you want a less strenuous route.

    • Scroll down to check out the Google Map and tree stops on the walk.

    • Follow the Google map on your smart phone. Each stop has photos of the tree you are looking for.

    • Or print the Tree Pages which include the map and blank pages and tips for drawing your tree observations.

  2. Artist-Led Tree Walks (1 mile) RSVP on Eventbrite for occasional guided tree walks in the neighborhood. There is no formal schedule to these walks. I announce them via Instagram and Eventbrite. We usually meet up at the Signature Arts Building at 130 Warwick St SE.

  3. Contribute to Science (online) Log in to iNaturalist.org and join the Trees of Prospect Park project to add your photographic observations to the digital map.
