Notice Nature Everywhere

Summary

Notice Nature Everywhere is a social practice art project that engages the public in observing nature as it is found where we live, work and play. This might be a lush field or an urban parking lot. Beautiful materials, tools, and prompts put the public in the role of the naturalist-observer, encouraging teaching and learning as a community and producing tangible references that capture knowledge generated by participants.

Artist, botanist and educator Sarah Nassif guides participants of all ages and abilities past any inhibitions about “being an artist” through the leaf tracing method she has developed over years of working with diverse audiences. The results are beautiful botanical drawings reflecting local nature through the eyes of the people living there. A child’s drawing holds as much weight at that of a professional illustrator. The drawings can be displayed on a temporary gallery clothesline for public viewing and then taken home by participants. To create a lasting resource for the community, Sarah Nassif can scan the drawings and design a crowd-sourced field guide that can be made available online as a physical booklet.
